Dolly

On this day in history in 1996 Dolly the sheep became the first successfully cloned mammal.

Dolly was names after Dolly Parton and was clones from a mammary gland. Scientists took cells from a ewe (a female sheep) an after producing numerous eggs they implanted them into surrogate ewes. After less than 150 days Dolly was born.

How Dolly was cloned

Dolly lived a relatively short life, dying at the age of 6, after suffering progressive lung disease. She suffered numerous genetic abnormalities, including arthritis, which raised lingering questions on the safety of cloning.
